Bryst Travels to Brazil

On Monday, August 20, 2007, Bryst International embarked on a
13-day tour with its Boys BFA/Top Dogs Team to Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
The tour was designed to provide the Canadian players with an opportunity to
test themselves against Brazilian opposition that represented the Football
Clubs from Cruzeiro FC and the surrounding communities. Of the 16 players traveling,
3 players had traveled with Bryst to Europe in previous years.
Monday, August 20
The group flew from Toronto to Miami, Florida,
enroute to Sao Paolo, Brazil.
Tuesday, August 21
The group arrived in Belo Horizonte via Sao Paolo in the morning. They were met by the Cruzeiro Football Club bus
and taken to their Youth Academy complex at Toca Da Raposa 1. The players and staff got settled in their rooms
and rested. The facility had a residence, cafeteria, administration offices,
medical office, equipment room, laundry room, weight room, change rooms, school
and four outdoor fields on site. The Cruzeiro FC youth players (ages 13-19)
were also on site plus a visiting U14 Korean team.
Wednesday, August 22
The team had a light training session in the morning with two of the Cruzeiro Youth Coaches. One was a field coach and one was a
goalkeeper coach. The training focused on technique work, ball possession,
crossing and finishing and a scrimmage. Their English communication was
good enough for the players and staff to understand. The Canadian players
trained in Cruzeiro uniforms that were washed each day.
The afternoon session focused on technique work again,
attacking team play and defending team play. The goalkeepers were also
receiving an hour of technical work.
The Cruzeiro U/20 team were training on another field and
the skill level was very high. They had just returned from an international
tournament in Holland. They won the
tournament against other top level European clubs and sold their three top
players on the spot to European clubs for millions of Euro Dollars. This is the
club's focus to develop and sell players.
That night, the team is a taken to a professional game at
the Minheiro Stadium in Belo Horizonte.
The game is between Cruzeiro and Goies. The stadium holds 85,000 people and
there are 30,000 at this game. The singing and dancing creates a fantastic
atmosphere and the boys really enjoyed it. Cruzeiro won the game 1-0.
Thursday, August 23
The team had a regular training session in the morning that focused on team play.
In the afternoon, the team had their first game at the
Cruzeiro facility against the Fox Academy,
who are a feeder system to the Cruzeiro Youth Academy.
Five of the Cruzeiro Youth Staff attended the game to evaluate the Canadian
players and the Fox Academy players.
Fox went up 3-0 in the first half on mental mistakes
by individual players. In the second half, the Bryst team settled and scored a
goal from Matthew Puckett on a great through ball from Nick Lobraico. Final score was 1-3.
Friday, August 24
The morning training session focused on transition. The
Cruzeiro coaches were taking all of the training sessions with input from the
Bryst coaches. In the afternoon, the team traveled to downtown Belo
Horizonte and visited the Cruzeiro Club Store to buy
club equipment. They visited a local mall on their way home.
Saturday, August 25
The bus left at 7:00 am for the 1.5 hour trip to Cataenopolis, a community outside of Belo
Horizonte. This club is another feeder club for Cruzeiro FC.
The game kicked off in a walled-in community field.
Cataenopolis go up 1-0 on a penalty kick. Bryst come back with two goals from
Matt Ang before halftime. In the second half, it was an even game and the final score was 2-1 for Bryst.
Sunday, August 26
The bus left at 8:00 am for the 30 minute trip to Frigoarnaldo Football Club. This was another feeder
club to Cruzeiro FC. The facility was another walled-in field with a very hard
surface. Due to the tight marking and hard ground, Bryst resorted to a long
ball game that unsettled the Brazilians. Gabriel Burke created an opportunity in the second
half that caused an own goal and allowed Bryst to win the game 1-0. It was a
hard-fought game under tough conditions. The Cruzeiro coaching staff was there again to assess the
players. In the afternoon, the team was taken to the Cruzeiro FC
Leisure Club. This facility contained 4 full sized pools, small turf soccer
fields, salon football surface and restaurants. The club has over 10,000
subscribers to their social club.
Monday, August 27
The team trained again in the morning on the fieldturf field.
In the afternoon, the team trained very light as the temperature was around 35 degrees C.
Tuesday, August 28
The team trained at 9:00 am in the morning and 2:00 pm in the afternoon.
Wednesday, August 29
The team had the morning off and walked through the local
Eco-Park to see the alligators. In the afternoon, the team traveled one hour to Prudente De
Morais to play the Sauna Football Club. This club was also a feeder club to
Cruzeiro. The field was also walled-in and the surface was very hard. The long
ball play from Bryst was in effect again.
The conditions created a very hard, physical game from both
teams with several scoring chances. In the end there were no goals scored. The
final was 0-0. A good result from the Bryst team. There were many school kids out watching the game after
their school day was finished. This created an exciting atmosphere. Even to the
point of throwing stones at Canadian players.
Thursday, August 30
The team had a light training session in the morning. In the afternoon, the team played the Cruzeiro Under 15 team
at the Cruzeiro facility. This was a very well-played game with both teams
getting chances. Cruzeiro scored one goal at the end of the first half and one
goal at the end of the game. Final score was 0-2 for Cruzeiro. Bryst battled
and defended very well and created some attacking chances.
Friday, August 31
In the morning, the team traveled to the Cruzeiro FC
Professional Team's training facility, called Toca Da Raposa 2. It contained 4
grass fields, administration offices, medical facilities and the players'
hotel. It was a well groomed and self contained facility in the hills above Belo Horizonte.
The team left for the airport in the afternoon enroute to Sao Paolo and then Miami.
Saturday, September 1
The team arrived home safe in Toronto.
The following players were identified by the Cruzeiro FC
coaching staff as having long term potential:
Tyler Van Uden, Max Materne, Adam Hintz, Maanu Gill, Nick
Lobraico and Chris Puckett.

Media Release: Top Dog Fraser Aird Shines for Team Canada at the Danone
Nations Cup
Bryst Top Dog, Fraser Aird made his way to Lyon, France this July as a member of
Team Canada in this summer's Danone Nations Cup. Now in its eighth year, the DNC has become the world's top
football tournament for children 10 to 12 years old. Built on 4 solid values:
openness, pleasure of the game, fair-play and accessibility, this is much more
than a competition of mere physical ability. For these youngsters, it is an
experience of a lifetime.
Aird, a Scarborough native, was one of only four Ontario players named to the
squad of the 5000 youth players of Ontario on trial. Following
selections across all provinces, Aird and his thirteen team mates as well as
coaches and staff set off for the June 26-29 tournament to battle for a chance
to play in the Grand International championship game.
Canada Found itself in excellent company as competition was underway at Le Stade de
Gerland; with the Canadian squad drawn into Group H alongside Switzerland, Germany, Poland and Vanuatu. By the end of round
robin competition, Canada sat atop Group H with 10pts (3 wins, and a 0-0 draw to Poland. The Canadians
outplayed the Russians in the 4th round to advance, only to fall to Turkey in the quarterfinals in
a penalty kick showdown.
Finishing in 8th position of the 40 participating nations, it is certain that
these youth stars of Canada impressed tournament sponsor Zinedine Zidane and
are surely eager to return for next years competition.
Furthermore, it is an accomplishment like none-other for Aird and no doubt an experience
that will remain with him as he continues to develop as one of Canada's top soccer players.

Media Release: Bryst Camps with Burnley FC Coaches a Huge Success
Maanu Gill and Jacob Mathews (left) awarded trial with Burnley FC
Burnley Football Club's finest in Youth Academy coaching, Geoff Smith and Robbie Smith, joined our team of
Bryst International coaches for the past two weeks of Bryst Summer Camp at McDowell Park in Mississauga,
July 3-6 and at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, July 9-13. This new partnership was without question a
great success!!
Members of the Bryst Top Dogs and the Football Academy Teams Program had the privilege of not only
putting their skills on display but most importantly receiving an insightful assessment concerning
advancing their game to the next level. In this case, dreams of a possible trial with Burnley FC itself.
Gary Miller, President of Bryst International, was quick to point out that Geoff Smith and Robbie Smith
of the Burnley Youth Academy were very impressed by the level of players in the Bryst Teams Program and
Top Dogs Program. "The level of all ages of players showed a lot of potential for the future. The female
players especially stood out as Burnley does not have a girls program" says Miller.
We congratulate Maanu Gill and Jacob Mathews, who were both rewarded for their skill and work ethic
with a trial at Burnley this fall. Gill, a midfielder with BFA U18's and Mathews, a Top Dogs goalkeeper
head off for three weeks come September. Standouts amongst the 150 top level Bryst players during the two week camp,
Gill and Mathews show promise for a longstanding career in soccer. Bryst International is certainly proud to
see two of their own climbing the ranks.
Burnley FC is a member of the Champions League of England and finished 15th in the 24-team pool this
past season. Bryst plans to establish a player and coaching development relationship with Burnley FC and
anticipates seeing more and more Bryst athletes heading overseas to expand their development.
Tom McLean of the BFA Program spent 2 years in the Burnley Youth Academy and is now off to Bowling Green
State University, in Ohio, on a soccer scholarship this fall. Chris McLean and Marcos Nunes of Bryst
have also been on trial with Burnley.

Bryst boys stand out!
The BFA U16 and U18 Boys participated in the recent CSA National B License. The players were used in
the training sessions by coaches from all over Canada who were attempting to
pass their B License. The Director of Coaching and Player Development for the
CSA, Ray Clark, made the following comment about the players:
"First let me
say that the players represented Bryst and themselves exceptionally well. They
put 100% into every session and definitely helped the coaches by providing an
enthusiastic and competent group of players to work with. Some of the boys had
been with us a year ago and even though they did well then they certainly raised
the bar this year. There were also three boys who volunteered to return in the
afternoon and even after they had played their hearts out in the morning they
came back and did it again in the afternoon. I hope they enjoyed the experience
and I thank them for providing our coaches with a good quality product to work
with. Attitude is something that is developed in players and you and the
coaches must take credit for the way the boys handled themselves.
All the coaches commented positively about the boys and were grateful that they
had the chance to work with them during their Exams."
Learning from the Best

Bryst Staff Coach,
Steve Payne, was recently in Timmins, Ontario, conducting a two-day clinic for
the top young players in Timmins. It was a resounding success and Steve met some

from Timmins and regularily attends training in Brampton through the
winter.

The track star that almost wasn't goes for gold at OFSAA
Merid Seleshi finds the way to balance running and soccer thanks to a coach who
wouldn't give up. When it comes to the world of amateur track and field, there isn't much
that escapes Bill Stephens, who has been coaching the sport in Toronto for
almost four decades.
So you can imagine the stunned look on his face when a teaching
colleague at Birchmount Park Collegiate - a school with an exceptional athletic
program - told him about Merid Seleshi, a Grade 9 student whose running ability
was turning heads in gym class.
Stephens, who had completed recruiting graduating elementary school
students and missed Seleshi, was surprised yet again when the 14-year-old
revealed that becoming a professional soccer player took precedence over track.
Having coached many talented youngsters, Stephens wasn't about to give up so quickly.
Stephens found a solution that now has Seleshi playing club soccer and also
competing for the school team in track. Better yet, Seleshi - who came to Canada three
years ago after spending much of his life in Kenya - is now prepping for OFSAA,
the largest high school track and field championship in Canada, which begins tomorrow in
Ottawa.
Seleshi, who also pulled in an 86 per cent average this year, qualified
for the midget boys' 800 metres with the fastest time at a provincial
qualifying meet. Two weeks ago, at the Metro Regional, he clocked a personal best
time of one minute, 59.89 seconds.
"Under two minutes is putting up very good numbers for a kid his age,"
beamed Stephens. "Not only am I still shocked that I missed him while
looking for up-and-coming track kids, but I have someone who can only
get better."
Seleshi is also competing in the 1,500 metres at the Ontario Federation
of School Athletic Association final. He had a personal best time of
4:15.00, also at the Metro Regional, winning the race by eight seconds.
Undefeated this year in both races and with a future that bodes well,
he's still gung-ho about becoming a professional soccer player.
"I didn't want to do track in school... too much pressure,"
said Seleshi, whose mother is paying a stipend to send him to an elite
soccer academy. "I could probably play soccer and run for my school but there might be
a conflict and it would take away time from me focusing more on one
sport. "If you're willing to work hard, have a good work ethic, it's great," said
Seleshi, who lives down the street from Birchmount and trains five days
a week. "Where I come from, I learned English but things are much harder. Here,
everything is comfortable and I now have a great future - especially at
becoming a pro soccer player."
